Worth reading and worth practicing. The Beneficial Buffer™ is one of the simplest ways to sound prepared under pressure. Not rehearsed. Not abrupt. Just present.
A Beneficial Buffer™ is a short, gracious phrase that sits between the question and your response.
“That’s a tough question.”
“You’re hitting on a key area we considered.”
“I appreciate you asking that.”
Then a beat. Then your answer.
Why does it work? It’s beneficial on every front.
You sound responsive, not reactive or abrupt.
You buy a moment to consolidate your thinking.
You arrive at a clear, concise, strategic response.
The questioner feels heard and seen.
And you sound gracious, even happy to field the question.
All of that beats “Umm” or “Errr.”
One caution: slow down and let the beat land. Deliver it sincerely. Rush it or overdo the warmth, and it tips into sycophancy, the opposite of what you want.
Use it more than you think you need to. Practice until it’s a habit, not a technique. That’s when it works best, when people stop noticing it and just notice that you’re someone who makes them feel heard.
My personal favorite? “That’s a tough question.” It makes the questioner feel smart, and me look smart when I answer it well.
Now I want to hear from you.
